Why processed food can be deceptive

Updated: Apr 21, 2021

Nauru, a microstate in Oceania tops the world ranks in obesity with 94.5% of its population affected with a BMI at 34-35. The depletion of Nauru's natural resources has led to its strong dependency on processed foods which is high in sugar and fat. To add to that there is a lack of exercise, health care, health education and literacy on the island.

When you eat processed foods you don’t fill up as quickly and eat faster,

so you consume more food.

Knowing more about nutrition and what foods make you feel satisfied can be of great help in leading a happy and fulfilling lifestyle. Here's a short guide:

What makes you feel full:

- Protein, fiber, complex carbs, good fat, a diverse plate with whole foods, feeling fulfilled with your life "off the plate", experimenting with different foods and cuisines, cooking together with loved ones

What likely won't satisfy you easily or for long:

- Simple carbs, sugar, very processed meals, too small portions, not diverse enough portions, too little sleep, not a diverse enough meal plan throughout the week

What increases your cravings:

- Light products (artificial sweeteners), sugar, too much restriction, no predictability in your meal times, salty foods, sweetened foods, being surrounded by indulgent foods
